varnishing a gingerbread house to preserve it ?

by Rozina
(UK)

Hi I need to make a gingerbread house early. It's not going to be eaten only for display purposes and I want to stop it going bendy? Please can someone advise if I should varnish it a) what should I use and b) do I varnish it first then decorate with icing after. I'm worried if I varnish first the icing wont stick and if I varnish after it will turn the icing yellow or knock it off?
Thank you

thank you Kelly, I'm just so unsure how to proceed as it's for a company I'm making a tall 3 tier house style and need to be able to make in advance. they said last year some of the tops of the pieces started to warp

I've never heard of varnishing first and I'm thinking the icing might not stick (and you may want the varnish to protect the icing and candies as well as the gingerbread anyway). Most varnishes don't yellow in the first year - make sure to look for one that says "non-yellowing".

Does anyone else have any advice for Rozina about gingerbread varnishes?
