Icing falls off gingergread

Each year I decorate gingerbread cookies with royal icing for my tree. After a week or so the icing will fall off. How can I prevent this?

After my gingerbread has cooled, I paint it with clear piping gel. The icing has something tacky to hang on to. It works for me and I make a lot of gingerbread house.
