Origin of gingerbread
by: Chef Charles E. Mason II

Gingerbread was brought to Europe in 992 by the Armenian monk Gregory of Nicopolis (Gregory Makar) (Grégoire de Nicopolis). He left Nicopolis Pompeii, to live in Bondaroy (France), near the town of Pithiviers. He stayed there 7 years, and taught the Gingerbread cooking to French priests and Christians. He died in 999.[1][2][3]

Gingerbread Houses

To be perfectly honest....who cares. You bake and decorate gingerbread houses for your children for the fun and enjoyment of it. That's pretty simple.

Your Country Question
by: Kelly

If you're asking about the origins of the gingerbread house, it's generally assumed that gingerbread (Lebkuchen) was first formed into house shapes in Germany.

The Grimm Brothers' "Hansel and Gretel" (from an old German fairy tale) popularized the gingerbread house in the 19th century. But gingerbread (Lebkuchen) cookies and cakes date back to at least the 11th century throughout Europe.

Early forms of gingerbread cakes have been traced to the ancient Greeks and Egyptians.
