What is the best way to make sure your gingerbread windows are perfect after you bake them? Last year I pre-cut mine and the dough grew together.

My first attempt at gingerbread houses this past weekend, and any pieces turned out miss shapen after baking, I simply trimmed with a sharp knife shortly after removing from the oven.
