gingerbread vs. fondant and marzipan

The photographs of the contest at Grove Park Inn show many wonderful gingerbread creations. Once you are there to see the creations, it is quite a let down to see little gingerbread and an abundance of marzipan and fondant. They are very nice, but not what is advertised or traditional. The winners the last two years at least don't seem to be gingerbread at all.

Gingerbread Houses

My husband & I have had the pleasure of visiting Ashville NC 3 years in a row and my 2 very favorite places to visit and see are the Candle light at the Biltmore and the Grove Park Inn.

We had a wonderful Thanksgiving dinner last year 2012 and spent the entire day viewing the gingerbread competition houses.They are a must see! We have done this for the past 3 years and we're so sad we could not make it this year.

This event is a must see.It makes you so happy inside and out.It makes you feel like an old fashion Holidays the way things use to be.

The Christmas trees in the Grove Park will also take your breath away! On Thanksgiving, I almost forgot there is a beautiful old fashion sleigh for picture taking! If there were a suggestion box I would say the only thing missing would be some red velvet cloaks with white fur trim to borrow for the picture taking in the sled! That would be so cool and make for a great picture! They would be a one size fits all and do the trick! The men could have a plaid cloak or a solid black. How awesome would that be!

I have also had dinner on the terrace in the evening overlooking the great Blue Ridge Mountains. It was so romantic and beautiful! The Grove Park inn shops are wonderful 7 have so many unusual items you will never see just anywhere. There are many one of a kind. The Grove Park Inn is truly one of my very special places to visit!

I really only offer comments on these contest listings in case anyone wants to add any additional information.

The Asheville community has supported this event for many years and brought local business to the grove park inn. As of last year you started charging for parking and we did not come and now this year you are restricting when we can come and view the gingerbread houses? It has been a family tradition for me and my family to visit the Grove Park Inn on Thanksgiving evening and look at gingerbread houses and enjoy cocktails in the lobby. Well I for one will not be coming to view the houses, or use the restuarants, or use the spa or any other service that you have. It is obvious to me that you do not need my business. I will also make other "local" people aware of your success with tourist and the desire to cater to them.
My family will find a new tradition with a company that still wants our patrionage.
